DARTMOUTH, Mass. (WLNE) – Dartmouth Police Detectives are investigating an incident of anti-Semitism after an offensive sign found outside a local bagel shop.
The incident happened Tuesday morning at New York Bagel Co. located along State Route 6.
The shop’s owner pulled into work around 6:15 p.m. and noticed something was wrong.
“As I was pulling into the parking lot I saw something that kind of looked like a sign, but I didn’t know what was going on,” said owner Steven Ginsberg.
When he looked closer, he saw a sign hanging from a light post that read “A Jew Park.”
“I was very taken aback by it,” said Ginsberg.
Ginsberg, who is Jewish, has owned the shop for 30 years and has never had an issue like this.
“I never thought of this area to have any anti-Semitic connotations with it,” said Ginsberg.
He said the sign came from the business A & A Jewelers across the street, and that the original sign read “A & A Jewelers Parking.”
“The way the sign was done, it almost looked like someone cut it with an Exacto knife. It wasn’t like the wind broke it,” said Ginsberg. “The wind couldn’t have pushed it over to my parking lot, stood it up on the light post, and taped it to the light post.”
He’s hurt by the incident and is worried about the growing number of anti-Semitic attacks happening around the country.
“Just in Fall River alone, the gravesites that were damaged. About 8 months ago, about 60 gravestones were painted or knocked over in a Jewish cemetery,” said Ginsberg.
He has one message for whoever hung the sign in his parking lot.
“You should really think before you act. Don’t single anyone out,” said Ginsberg. “We have too much hate in this world already, try love.”
Police continue to investigate the incident. They will be checking the jewelry store’s surveillance footage once the owner returns from Europe.
