Opening statements in Karen Read retrial set for Tuesday

DEDHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — Opening statements are expected to begin next week in the second trial of Karen Read.

A full jury has been seated as of Tuesday with Judge Beverly Cannone wanting 18 jurors, 12 for the panel and six alternates.

Read will now go on trial for the second time, charged with murdering her then-boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, by hitting him with a car and leaving him to die.

Opening statements are set for Tuesday, April 22.

Read’s defense is asking the court to throw out two of the three charges against her, including second-degree murder.

Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson denied the request for an immediate stop to her retrial on behalf of the Supreme Court.

The full court is still scheduled to hear Read’s appeal on April 25.
