IRS planning to pull Harvard’s tax-exempt status

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WLNE) — The Internal Revenue Service is making plans to take away Harvard’s tax exempt status according to CNN.

It comes amid a tug-of-war between the Trump administration and the ivy league school over billions in federal funding.

The administration wants Harvard to change its hiring practices and how it runs the school, specifically citing what they call antisemitic protests on college campuses.

Harvard is refusing.

Congressman Jake Auchincloss represents much of Bristol county, and is a Harvard grad and been a vocal critic of colleges on the subject of antisemitism and thinks this is the wrong approach.

“To respond to what is an endemic problem on too many universities, the wrong way to respond is to stamp right-wing politics on the universities in the name of anti-Semitism and to impair funding for sickle cell disease and mobility improvements for stroke survivors or autism research. That does not help anybody,” said Auchincloss.

It’s not clear right now whether the IRS is considering revoking the tax-exempt status of other universities.
