PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Venezuelan man living in the country illegally pled guilty in court to resisting arrest by Immigration and Customs Enforcement Deportation Officers, according to Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom.

22-year-old Edward Antonio Reyes Calderon pled guilty to a charge of resisting arrest of a federal officer.

According to Bloom, the defendant admitted he violently resisted arrest by three uniformed ICE officers on Feb. 13, 2025.

Documents claim that during the arrest, Reyes Calderon “violently” resisted arrest and grabbed an officer’s utility belt, which the Department of Justice said was inches away from the officer’s gun.

After several minutes, an officer pepper sprayed the defendant to control the incident.

The defendant was taken into custody, and two officers were evaluated with minor injures.

The defendant is scheduled to be sentenced on July 22, 2025.
