Pawtucket, Providence to observe 110th anniversary of Armenian genocide

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — Thursday marks a solemn anniversary for members of the Armenian community.

On this day 110 years ago, Armenian intellectuals were deported from what was then known as Constantinople which began the Armenian genocide.

Between 1915 and 1917, the Ottoman Empire is estimated to have killed between 800,000 – 1.2 million Armenians.

The United States only recently recognized the genocide during president Joe Biden’s administration in 2021.

Thursday in Pawtucket, governor Dan McKee will speak at a raising of the Armenian flag at city hall.

On Sunday, the Armenian Martyr’s Memorial Committee will honor the anniversary at Providence’s North Burial Ground.
