National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day: 2024 homeless pet adoptions surpass previous year

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Wednesday is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, and an estimated 5.8 million cats and dogs entered U.S. shelters and rescues in 2024.

About 4.1 million in total were adopted from shelters and rescues.

That comes out to a slight increase in adoption rates for both cats and dogs from 2023.

There are multiple local shelters if you’re looking for a new member of the family.

Hotel for Homeless Dogs in Cumberland is also looking for fosters as their shelter is currently at capacity.
