Emergency Medical Services Bicycle Program returns to Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Mayor Brett Smiley, Providence Fire Department Chief Derek Silva, and EMS Chief Zach Kenyon said that the Providence Fire Department’s Emergency Medical Services Bicycle Program would be returning to the city’s downtown area.
The program was launched as a pilot project that ran from August to mid-October 2023 for four hours each weekday.
Smiley said that the program will be staffed by trained firefighters to provide “on-the-ground emergency prevention, overdose response, and public education.”
“Team members distribute Narcan kits, including nasal Narcan, protective gloves, and information about PVD Safe Stations for those looking to enter recovery programs,” the mayor’s office said. “The EMS Bicycle personnel is also equipped with an AED, oxygen, IV, and over-the-counter medications.”
The program will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each weekday.
