Karen Read retrial witness McCabe grilled by defense, accused of lying by Read

DEDHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — Key Karen Read retrial prosecution witness Jennifer McCabe is returning to the witness stand Friday for day eight in trial.

McCabe was a close friend of Boston police officer John O’Keefe and was present for nearly every key moment the night of O’Keefe’s death.

On Wednesday, McCabe recounted the hours leading up to O’Keefe’s death.

The prosecutor asked McCabe if she remembered Read saying anything to arriving first responders, to which McCabe answered “She told the first responder, ‘I hit him. I hit him. I hit him.'”

The defense drilled McCabe on that statement.

“Your memory is getting better, even as we sit here today, correct?” said Read’s defense attorney.

The attorney then stated that Read never stated that she had hit O’Keefe.

McCabe repeated her account of the event.

Read herself had remarks on the testimony after court wrapped up for the day, saying “Inconsistencies, every statement is different. Under oath, not under oath, the cops are all wrong. This is very similar to what we saw a year ago…because she is lying.”
