State House to be lit red to honor nurses

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island State House will be lit up red through May 12 to honor nurses throughout the state and country.

According to the American Nurses Association, today marks the beginning of National Nurses Week, which begins on May 6 and ends on May 12- Florene Nightingale’s birthday- each year.

Over 150 landmarks in 34 different states, as well as the District of Columbia, U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam will be lit up to honor the week, according to the association.

That betters the 85 buildings that had been illuminated for the week last year.

Other landmarks lit up to honor nurses at various points over the next week include the Leonard P. Zakim Bridge in Boston, One World Trade Center in New York and the Frederick Douglass Bridge in Washington, D.C.
