Newell Bridge in Cumberland work ongoing nightly ahead of full replacement

CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island Department of Transportation workers reopened the Newell Bridge on Diamond Hill Road this morning after overnight bridge work closed it.

The road, however, will partially close again tonight and tomorrow night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for more bridge work.

The bridge, which carries Route 114 over Ash Swamp Brook near the intersection of Nate Whipple Highway, is slated to be fully replaced later this year, with RIDOT saying that the current repairs are for “advanced work” on the bridge ahead of its replacement.

Next month, RIDOT plans on demolishing and replacing a majority of the bridge over the course of an extended weekend, with a second closure in late fall needed to complete the work.

Detours in the area while the bridge is closed include Nate Whipple Highway, Mendon Road, West Wrentham Road and Pine Swamp Road.
