NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — All lanes on the northbound bridge carrying Route 1 over Route 138 are now open after the Rhode Island Department of Transportation finished a rapid bridge installation early Monday morning.

The new bridge, as well as the new southbound bridge, which was installed last weekend, replaces a bridge that RIDOT considered to be in poor condition.

The bridge replacements were done as part of RIDOT’s Tower Hill Road Bridge & Paving project, which is currently projected to cost $35.8 million and conclude in the summer of 2026.

According to RIDOT’s website, additional work in the area includes the repaving of Route 1 from Gilbert Stuart Road to its intersection with Route 4; that work is expected to be completed later this year.
