Guatemalan national charged with alleged assault of federal officer

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Guatemalan national illegally present in the United States has been detained for allegedly assaulting a federal agent, according to the office of Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Rhode Island Sara Miron Bloom.

Miguel Tamup-Tamup, 28, also known as Miguel US Tamup, is charged with assault, resisting and impeding a law enforcement officer in the performance of official duties.

Tamup was arrested and charged with DUI on April 19 after he allegedly crashed his vehicle into another car.

He was arraigned and released, and his fingerprints matched ICE fingerprint records of an illegally present individual.

On April 30, Tamup was pulled over by ICE and Homeland Security officers and refused to exit the vehicle, leading to officers attempting to remove him from the car.

While agents attempted to place him in handcuffs, Tamup allegedly threw his upper body and shoulders against the agents and flailed his arms.

One of the agents fell to the ground and suffered a serious leg injury and Tamup fled the scene, according to Bloom’s office.

Tamup was located at a residence in Providence on Thursday and was taken into custody by ICE and Homeland Security agents.

Tamup appeared before a U.S. Magistrate Judge and was ordered detained.
