McCoy demolishers find first time capsule at stadium

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — Shawmut Construction announced on Monday that a demolition crew at McCoy Stadium has found one of the time capsules located underneath the field.

The city and company plan to open the capsule on June 23.

According to the Pawtucket Times, the capsule dates back 85 years, to when then-Pawtucket mayor Thomas McCoy placed it into the stadium’s cornerstone in November of 1940.

Pawtucket Police are currently holding the capsule in a secure location.

June 23 of this year marks the 44th anniversary of the longest professional baseball game ever played, where the PawSox beat the Rochester Red Wings in 33 innings.

Shawmut is still looking for a second capsule buried on the McCoy site that they believe is between the pitcher’s mound and home plate.

That capsule’s contents, which dates back to the 33-inning game, will also be revealed on June 23 if it is located before that date.
