Expert in Karen Read retrial says tail light DNA ‘strong match’ for victim O’Keefe

DEDHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — Expert analyst Nick Bradford took the stand in regard to DNA evidence in the Karen Read retrial.

Bradford discussed his analysis of various DNA samples, including part those from Read’s tail light, and a hair sample.

According to our Boston affiliate WCVB, the tail light DNA came from three separate people, including at least one male.

The sample was a “strong match” for Boston police officer, John O’Keefe.

Bradford explained the hair sample found in the back of the SUV did not give enough DNA to identify it.

Defense attorney Alan Jackson asked Bradford about the statistical likelihood that troopers Michael Proctor and Yuri Bukhenik’s DNA were the other DNA results found on the tail light.

Bradford could not completely rule out Proctor, but said there was a, “strong support for exclusion.”

Testimony is still ongoing.

Monday’s testimony comes after Judge Beverly Cannone decided to allow the prosecution to present new evidence with an expert witness.

WCVB reported that the prosecution expert is expected to explain a time differential recorded by read’s SUV and John O’Keefe’s phone.

The defense argued the prosecution was changing its story and undermining their argument, which the prosecution team denies.

Cannone will allow the defense leeway in their cross-examination of this expert, and the defense may also be able to recall some witnesses.
