‘Collective gratitude’: New Bedford designated as Purple Heart City

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — The City of New Bedford has officially been designated as a Purple Heart City, according to a statement from the office of Mayor Jonathan Mitchell.
New Bedford received the designation from the Military Order of the Purple Heart, which awards the title to communities for their commitment to honoring veterans who were killed or wounded in combat.
“New Bedford has long exalted those who have worn the uniform,” Mayor Mitchell said.
“The Purple Heart represents a deeper and more permanent sacrifice. Becoming a Purple Heart City cements our collective gratitude to those who’ve paid an exceptional price in service of our Nation.”
A decoration awarded to any military member who is wounded or killed while serving, the Purple Heart was established by George Washington in 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit.
The medal was revamped as the Purple Heart in 1932.
Purple Heart Day will take place in New Bedford on August 7.
