Accident reconstructionist testifies in Read retrial

DEDHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — Judge Beverly Cannone will issue a ruling on contested witness testimony in the murder retrial of Karen Read.

On Tuesday, the jury heard from Judson Welcher, an accident reconstructionist.

Defense attorney Robert Alessi argued Welcher’s conclusion is irrelevant since the defense asserts read didn’t get into a collision in her SUV.

Special prosecutor Hank Brennan argued the defense does not get to define his case.

Welcher testified Tuesday that he examined read’s SUV and created a 3D model.

He also noted he purchased a vehicle identical to read’s 2021 Lexus for his analysis.

He even dressed like John O’Keefe in one experiment and used paint to show where the SUV may have impacted O’Keefe’s body.

Read spoke outside the courthouse Tuesday saying Welcher didn’t mimic what the Commonwealth is accusing her of.

Welcher is expected to be the prosecution’s last witness and the defense is expected to start calling witnesses once the reconstructionist’s testimony is over.
