Firefighters battle multiple fires at waste-to-energy plant in Rochester

ROCHESTER, Mass. (WLNE) — The Rochester Fire Department said firefighters battled multiple fires at the Covanta waste-to-energy plant on May 27.

Rochester fire crews responded to the facility on Route 28 around 2:40 a.m. for a report of a structure fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered flames on the trash conveyor belts, which had extended to other areas and created multiple fires.

After a “quick response and aggressive attack,” the flames were controlled within an hour.

Firefighters remained on scene for multiple hours.

Crews with Marion and Mattapoisett assisted with the effort.
