Officials investigating cause of train derailment in Cumberland

CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WLNE) — A train derailed in the town of Cumberland Wednesday night, according to a statement from Cumberland police.

The derailment occurred in the area of Mill Street and High Street at Titus at approximately 10 p.m. Wednesday.

The Providence and Worcester Railroad train derailed six railcars, with two of them carrying plastic pellets and two carrying auto racks.

The other two were empty, according to a statement from Genesee & Wyoming Railroad Services Inc. representative Tom Ciuba.

Two railroad crossings are blocked and traffic is being rerouted by Cumberland police.

The two crossings are expected to be impacted by the incident for much of the day Thursday as efforts to remove the derailed train begin.

Early reports indicate that were no hazardous material incidents, and there were no injuries, according to Ciuba and police.

The cause of the derailment is still under investigation.
