NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — The New Bedford Police Department said that a Thursday traffic stop led to the seizure of an illegal firearm.

23-year-old Gennys Silverio was charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license, failing to stop for police, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and leaving the scene of property damage.

Police said that Silverio was stopped after he was allegedly seen speeding on County Street and driving through a red light.

When officers stopped him and began speaking to him, Silverio allegedly tried to speed off, before crashing into a brick wall.

He then allegedly attempted to flee on foot before finally being apprehended by the officers.

Police alleged that a search of Silverio’s vehicle found a loaded .38 caliber revolver, which he did not have a license to carry.
