Lakeville and Raynham Police prevent Bitcoin scam from targeting resident
LAKEVILLE, Mass. (WLNE) — The Lakeville and Raynham Police Department said that a scam that targeted a resident was prevented Thursday.
Police said that the victim’s family visited the Lakeville Police Department after she, a 73-year-old Lakeville resident, had withdrew $20,000 from her bank account and was not answering her calls.
Police said that an investigation showed that the scammer had said that a computer virus had affected her, that the only way to protect her money was to withdraw and transfer the cash, and to not answer any phone calls.
The woman was found to be at a Bitcoin ATM at Coletti’s market by police from both departments, who prevented the transaction.
Residents who believe they may have fallen victim to such a scam or suspect they are communicating with would-be scammers are asked to contact the Lakeville Police Department at 508-947-4422.
