ABC6 speaks with Rhode Island physician amid 25-hour protest against potential healthcare cuts
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Rhode Island physician is taking a stand this weekend, fearing nationwide cuts to healthcare.
Dr. Otto Liebmann, an emergency physician, said he had been standing outside the Rhode Island State House since 8 a.m. Saturday.
He said it was part of a 25-hour protest in response to proposed cuts to Medicaid and Medicare being debated in Congress.
Republicans have said they only want to cut fraud, not the programs.
Liebmann said the inspiration for his protest came from Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., who spoke for 25 hours on the Senate floor almost exactly two months ago.
President Trump has vowed to protect both Medicare and Medicaid, but Democrats have argued his actions suggest he will cut the programs.
