Interest in electric vehicles at its lowest since 2019, AAA survey reports

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A recent survey released by AAA said that the percentage of adults that would be interested in purchasing an electric vehicle is at its lowest point in six years.

According to the survey, only 16% of U.S. adults voted that they would be “very likely” or “likely” to purchase a fully electric vehicle, which is the lowest percentage since 2019.

Additionally, the percentage of U.S. adults reporting that they would be “unlikely” or “very unlikely” rose from 51% to 63%, which is the highest percentage since 2022.

AAA reported the following reasons why consumers would not purchase an electric vehicle:

  • 62% of consumers cited high battery repair costs
  • 59% cited purchase price
  • 57% cited the perceived unsuitability of EVs for long-distance travel
  • 56% said a lack of convenient charging stations
  • 55% said fear of running out of charge while driving
  • About 30% said safety concerns
  • 27% cited challenges installing personal charging stations at home
  • 12% reported the potential reduction or elimination of tax credits and rebates
