‘Providence is joining:’ Rhode Island party to protest ICE Monday in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — As ICE protests have drawn national attention to Los Angeles, a local group is planning to rally against the agency here in Rhode Island.

PSL (Party for Socialism and Liberation) Rhode Island is planning an “emergency protest” against ICE and in support of immigrant communities at the Providence Federal Center on Monday starting at 6 p.m.

The protest, called “FROM LA TO PROVIDENCE: ICE OUT” will meet at 444 Westminster Street in Providence.

In a social media post, PSL Rhode Island stated in part:

This weekend tens of thousands marched in LA, facing down the National Guard and federal police. The people are in the streets all across the U.S., and Providence is joining. THIS MOVEMENT MUST BECOME AN UPRISING.

When reached for comment, Providence City Hall Press Secretary Anthony Vega stated:

Mayor Smiley respects the right to peaceful protest and understands the deep concerns that have prompted this demonstration. We encourage demonstrators to share their concerns respectfully and peacefully. As always, our priority is to support the rights of individuals to express themselves while keeping all residents and visitors safe.
