Pawtucket to unveil contents of two McCoy Stadium time capsules

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — Baseball is a game often accompanied by sentiment, and with McCoy Stadium now gone, the city of Pawtucket will be unveiling some new memories of the former home of the PawSox.
On the 44th anniversary of the Pawtucket Red Sox historic 33-inning game, city officials will display the contents of two time capsules unearthed during the demo of the old stadium.
The June 23 event will feature one capsule containing items from the 1981 “Longest Game in Baseball History,” and the other from under the 1940 cornerstone.
The event will be held at the Division Street entrance to the former stadium with parking available at Jenks Middle School at 350 Division Street.
There will be food trucks on hand for the celebration that will run from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Former PawSox and Boston Red Sox pitcher Jim Dorsey will be in attendance, along with Daniel Gold, a fan who attended the 33-inning game against the Rochester Red Wings.
Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebein and other city officials will also attend the unveiling.
McCoy Stadium hosted its last game in 2019 and was used as a training space for the Boston Red Sox during the 2020 season.
It then had sat shuttered before demolition began in March of 2025.
The new Pawtucket High School will be build on the former stadium site, expected to open in September of 2029.
The Pawtucket Red Sox moved to Worcester, Massachusetts playing their inaugural season as the WooSox in 2021.
