Man shot by Pawtucket officer in toy gun incident recovering from surgery

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — The man shot by a Pawtucket police officer on June 8 is now recovering from surgery.

28-year-old Sebastian Yidana was shot in the shoulder by Pawtucket police officer Thomas Letourneau after officials say Yidana waved a toy gun.

Yidana underwent surgery Tuesday.

His mother, Regina Socree, who, at a press conference last week, said that she had not been able to see her son since he was shot, was able to visit him on Sunday, according to Yidana’s attorney.

Yidana faces two charges, including felony assault, from the incident.

His family members and community advocates are calling for the charges to be dropped and for Pawtucket police officer Letourneau to be fired.

Advocates also said Yidana has mental health issues and Pawtucket police have not communicated with them.
