PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence Public School Department said that Jay Wegimont was placed on paid administrative leave after a simple assault charge.

Wegimont is a member of the Communications Department.

He was charged after an incident at South Kingstown Town Hall, where Wegimont is also a town councilor.

Narragansett Republican Town Committee member Anthony D’Ellena said that he pressed charges against Wegimont after a confrontation on June 9 where he alleged Wegimont “charged” at him and “proceeded to body slam [him] in the hallway and screamed in [his] face.”

D’Ellena said that Wegimont was angered by social media posts the Republican had made in the past about Wegimont’s previous DUI charges.

Wegimont was arrested for DUI on Jan. 13, 2023 and March 17, 2022.
