PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Providence police have arrested a man they say fired a gun during a large altercation at Updike and Peace Streets Tuesday night.

Wilkens Jean, 19, was arrested Friday morning by Providence Police Department personnel along with members from the Violent Fugitive Task Force, according to Providence City Hall Press Secretary Anthony Vega.

Jean is charged with three counts of felony assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of using a firearm while committing a crime of violence, one count of carrying a firearm without a license or permit and one count of firing in a compact area and one count of simple assault.

The arrest stems from a shots fired incident Tuesday night in the area, where an arriving officer observed a subject lying on the ground next to a wooden baseball bat.

Medical assistance was called in, and the officer learned from witnesses that the subject had been struck by a gray vehicle.

Another witness told the officer that she heard a single shot from the direction of a nearby parking lot, where a single spent shell casing was recovered.

The officer was also provided a cell phone video showing a large altercation followed by a subject firing a single shot toward the gray vehicle, which then struck the subject on the ground.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.
