Juneteenth weekend event to honor Black Civil War veterans
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Saturday, a Juneteenth ceremony will be held at Providence’s North Burial Ground.
The event will be honoring Black Civil War veterans.
52 Black veterans of the Civil War are buried at the North Burial Ground.
The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the cemetery’s Prescott Post.
It’s being hosted in partnership by the Juneteenth Project and North Burial Ground.
Approximately 179,000 Black men served in the Union Army during the Civil War.
On Sunday, the 7th annual Juneteenth Festival kicks off at Roger Williams Park.
The festival begins with a parade that will head down to the park’s temple to music.
There will be plenty of music and food to celebrate the day of freedom, and the “vibrant spirit of our community.”
The parade starts at 10 a.m. Sunday, with the festival kick off at noon.
