New Bedford opening cooling centers due to extreme heat

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — The City of New Bedford said it was opening cooling centers in order to combat an extreme heat warning that will be in effect for multiple days.

Public libraries will act as cooling centers during the heat wave, with the following hours in effect:

  • Main library, 613 Pleasant Street – 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Casa da Saudade, 58 Crapo Street – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 23 and June 25, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 24
  • Howland-Green, 3 Rodney French Boulevard – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 23 and June 25, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 24
  • Lawler – 745 Rockdale Avenue – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 23 and June 25, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 24
  • Wilks – 1119 Acushnet Avebue – 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

In addition, splash pads are located at the following parks:

  • Riverside Park
  • Brooklawn Park
  • Ashley Park
  • Clasky Common
  • Beauregard-Pina
  • Harrington Park
  • Magnet Park
  • Ben Rose
  • Montes Park

Lifeguard coverage at beaches will also be extended until 7 p.m.

The city said that the temperature is expected to reach over 100 degrees.
