South Kingstown council member in court for alleged ‘body slam’ assault

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — South Kingstown Town Council member Jay Wegimont is due in court Thursday morning as he faces a simple assault charge stemming from a June confrontation with another local leader.

An investigation opened after Narragansett Republican town committee member, Anthony D’Ellena said Wegimont “body slammed” him in a hallway at South Kingstown Town Hall on June 9.

Rhode Island Republican Chairman, Joe Powers, has since called for Wegimont’s resignation.

Wegimont also works as a member of the Providence Public School District in their communications district and has since been placed on leave.

Wegimont will be arraigned this morning at 9 a.m. in the 4th District Court.
