Mass. State Police sergeant in Karen Read investigation reassigned

BOSTON, Mass. (WLNE) — A Massachusetts State Police (MSP) sergeant who was part of the initial investigation into the 2022 death of Boston police officer John O’Keefe has been reassigned, according to a statement from MSP.
Sergeant Yuri Bukhenik was transferred on a temporary duty assignment to the MSP Division of Standards and Training effective Sunday, according to the statement from MSP Media Relations representative Tim McGuirk.
This assignment will run through October 4, according to the MSP personnel order.
In this new capacity, Bukhenik will “perform a variety of administrative functions in support of the Division’s daily operations.”
Bukhenik had been serving in the Division of Field Services and testified in the retrial of Karen Read in May.
He had faced questioning about why he decided to seize Read’s SUV and cellphone without a warrant.
“As the Colonel (Geoffrey Noble) said following the conclusion of the second trial, the events of the last three years have challenged our Department to thoroughly review our actions and take concrete steps to deliver advanced investigative training, ensure appropriate oversight, and enhance accountability,” said McGuirk.
