PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Roger Williams Park Zoo is mourning the loss of a Plains zebra who died after an accident on July 3.

Samantha, one of the zoo’s Plains zebras, was 24 years old and had been at the zoo since 2003.

According to the Zoo, Samantha suffered a fatal injury after she panicked during the July 3 storm, and collided with a fence.

A necropsy found that she “passed instantaneously,” according to the zoo.

“This was truly a tragic accident, and our Zoo family is heartbroken by this sudden and unexpected loss,” Roger Williams Park Zoo said.

The zoo said its zebras are being monitored as they “adjust to this sudden loss.”
