Coast Guard: Missing fishermen not found despite extensive Little Compton search
LITTLE COMPTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Two fishermen reported missing off Little Compton Saturday morning were not found despite an extensive search, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
In a statement released late Saturday night, a Coast Guard spokesperson said two people were reported missing in the water off Warren’s Point Beach Club.
According to the Coast Guard spokesperson, witnesses reported the first person slipping from the rocks into the water.
The witnesses said a second person then went into the water in an attempt to help, but then both went missing.
The Coast Guard and local partners conducted an extensive search, including using side-scan sonar, the spokesperson said, but the two missing fishermen were not found.
Search efforts were suspended at 3 p.m. Saturday, and the Coast Guard is no longer involved in the case, the spokesperson said.
In the statement, the Coast Guard spokesperson said: “The Coast Guard extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends affected by this incident.”
On July 16, Little Compton police confirmed to ABC6 News the two men’s bodies were recovered.
27-year-old Aldino Centeio and 31-year-old Valdir Centeio died.
A third person who went into the water to try to help was not injured.
