Providence school officials to consider leasing building to charter school company
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence Public School District is holding a special meeting as they mull over a controversial decision.
The board is considering a proposal that would allow a charter school to lease the former Carl G. Lauro Elementary School building.
The Federal Hill school closed in 2022.
Last year, charter school organization, Excel Academy, proposed a 35-year lease.
It comes as Providence aims to regain local control of their schools from the state.
School board president Ty’relle Stephens has voiced opposition to the lease, sending Providence City Council a letter this week, stating in part:
I am convinced that delaying this decision until local control is fully restored to the Providence school district is in the best interest of our community.
Proponents for the charter school say it will generate millions in revenue for the city, and provide a better education for students.
Tonight’s meeting is set for 5:30 p.m.
