Somerset fire crews respond to town nursing and rehab facility

SOMERSET, Mass. (WLNE) — A fire broke out this morning at a nursing and rehabilitation center.

Fire chief Jamison Barros called the fire that occurred overnight at the Somerset Ridge Center on Brayton Ave a best case scenario.

The fire broke out in a community room on the second floor of the building.

It was put out quickly by both firefighters and the building’s sprinkler system.

Barros praised the staff of the building saying they worked quickly to prevent any casualties.

This facility, according to its website, has 135 beds.

The chief initially said that 43 of the building’s residents will be internally displaced as a result of the fire.

Peter Gedney, Administrator of Somerset Ridge Center, later clarified that the fire did not displace any residents.

Several residents were temporarily moved from their rooms due to an excess of water from the sprinklers and will return to those rooms after cleanup efforts have concluded, according to Gedney.

Gedney also said that no residents or staff were harmed during the fire.

Somerset Ridge Center overlooks Fall River, where the deadly Gabriel House fire occurred less than a month ago.

The chief said he was happy that a repeat of the tragedy could be prevented.
