FDA: Shipment of frozen Walmart brand shrimp might be radioactive
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A few weeks ago, we told you about a radioactive wasp nest found in South Carolina.
Now, the Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to eat certain shrimp at Walmart because they might be radioactive as well.
According to the FDA, three lots of Great Value brand raw frozen shrimp sold in 13 states may have been exposed to possible radioactive contamination.
All three have a best-by date of March 15, 2027.
Consumers should throw them out, as repeated low-dose exposure to Cesium-137 can elevate cancer risk.
This all started when U.S. Customs and Border Protection alerted the FDA that C-137 was detected in shipping containers at four U.S. ports.
The FDA then detected it in a sample of breaded shrimp distributed by an Indonesian company.
The FDA emphasizes, no shrimp in the U.S. food supply has tested positive, but you should still throw it out.
