Former Judge Frank Caprio dies at 88

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Beloved former Judge Frank Caprio has died at 88 years old, a spokesperson for Caprio posted to social media Wednesday afternoon.
The spokesperson said Caprio “passed away peacefully” after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
In the social media post, it said “Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond. His warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him…. In his honor, may we each strive to bring a little more compassion into the world — just as he did every day.”
In response, Governor Dan McKee said all Rhode Island flags at state agencies and buildings are directed to be flown at half-staff, and remain at at half-staff until sunset on the day of Caprio’s burial out of respect for the former judge.
Governor Dan McKee issued the following statement:
“Judge Caprio was a Rhode Island treasure.
On a personal level, he was a friend who faced his illness with bravery, and I will miss him dearly. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
Judge Caprio not only served the public well, but he connected with them in a meaningful way, and people could not help but respond to his warmth and compassion. He was more than a jurist—he was a symbol of empathy on the bench, showing us what is possible when justice is tempered with humanity.
Whether you grew up watching Judge Caprio on television or first saw his kindness touch lives around the world on social media, there is no question that his legacy will leave a lasting mark across generations.”
Senator Jack Reed issued the following statement:
“Frank Caprio uplifted many lives through his extensive career dedicated to service, including nearly four decades with the Providence Municipal Court.
As an attorney, judge, philanthropist, and beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Judge Caprio prioritized compassion and empathy in all he did – sharing kindness and a listening ear to all who appeared in his courtroom and sparking waves of good deeds through his approach to justice.
Judge Caprio’s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and people across the globe whose days were brightened by watching a clip of ‘Caught in Providence.’ My thoughts are with Judge Caprio’s beloved wife, Joyce, and the entire Caprio family.”
Senate President Valarie J. Lawson, Senate Majority Leader Frank A. Ciccone III, and Senate Majority Whip David P. Tikoian shared the following joint statement:

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of legendary Judge Frank Caprio, who was known everywhere for his compassion and good humor on the bench and was beloved by Rhode Islanders and worldwide fans of his show, Caught in Providence. Judge Caprio utilized his position for the greater good and helped countless individuals who appeared before him to turn their lives around. His community involvement and charitable endeavors extended far beyond his role in the court; he generously gave of his time and resources to so many worthy causes. His 88 years of service to Providence and the entire state have made Rhode Island a much better place. I extend my condolences to his wonderful family: his wife Joyce and their five children: former General Treasurer Frank T. Caprio, former State Representative David Caprio, John, Paul and Marissa.”

Congressman Seth Magaziner released the following statement on Caprio’s death:
