Video shows suspect running over officer, shots fired by police in North Kingstown
NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — Surveillance video obtained by ABC6 News shows a chaotic scene at a park and ride in North Kingstown where various law enforcement agencies were conducting an undercover operation on Aug. 1.
The video, obtained through a public records request, shows unmarked vehicles pulling up behind a white SUV.
As officers exit their vehicles, the SUV then accelerates directly into an officer.
Rhode Island State Police said 30-year-old Alec Perry of Pawtucket was behind the wheel.
Several officers then shot at Perry, police said.
Perry later crashed after a short vehicle pursuit, police said, and was taken into custody after a foot pursuit.
The officer was taken to the hospital but was reported to be in stable condition, state police said in an Aug. 2 press release.
North Kingstown police told ABC6 Friday the officer, identified as Detective J. Dylan Navakauskas, is doing better, and hoping to make a full physical recovery.
He’s now back at home recovering.
Police said Perry thought he was meeting a 13-year-old girl for a sexual encounter, but had actually been exchanging texts with an undercover police officer.
Perry was charged with indecent solicitation of a child, electronically disseminating indecent material to minors, felony assault, driving without the consent of the owner, eluding law enforcement, assault of a police officer, resisting arrest, obstruction of a police officer, duty to stop in an accident resulting in property damage, and driving with a suspended license.
Police said Perry was on probation at the time for previous charges of first-degree robbery, felony assault, and possession of a stolen vehicle.
The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office, as per protocol, police said.
A joint task force that included Rhode Island State Police, North Kingstown police, the FBI, the attorney general’s office, and NCIS worked the case.
Perry was granted $100,000 bail on Aug. 4 after his arraignment in this case.
He was ordered not to have contact with any minors, not to leave the state of Rhode Island without permission, and not to use the internet.
He’s due back in court on Sept. 5 in relation to a bail violation on a previous North Providence case.
Perry was held without bail on Aug. 4 in that case.
