UMass Lowell police say firearm suspect no longer in the area, shelter-in-place lifted
LOWELL, Mass. (WLNE) — University of Massachusetts Lowell Police said a shelter-in-place was lifted after an investigation into reports of a man on South Campus carrying an “object suspected to be a firearm.”
Police said a campus-wide shelter-in-place was implemented while officers attempted to find the suspect.
The shelter-in-place was lifted just after 5:15 p.m. after police determined the suspect was no longer in the area, UMass Lowell police said.
Police there there was “no report of a shooting.”
A large police presence remains in place, UMass Lowell police said, which will include officers patrolling residence halls overnight.
All classes and events on campus for the remainder of the day have been cancelled.
Massachusetts State Police said the incident occurred near Riverview Suites on Middlesex Street.
FBI Boston were also on scene.
Anyone with information on the individual’s whereabouts is asked to call 911.
