Candidate Matthew McDermott announces bid for vacant Providence City Council seat

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Another candidate has joined the race for the now vacant Ward 2 Providence City Council seat.

Democrat Matthew McDermott, self-described as a veteran pollster and Democratic strategist for progressive candidates and causes, has entered the race for the seat recently vacated by Helen Anthony.

McDermott also served as Co-Chair of the national LGBTQ+ Victory Fund Campaign Board and organized locally for the Kamala Harris/Tim Walz presidential ticket in 2024, according to his campaign website.

He is a native of Cranston, growing up in Pawtuxet Village.

Anthony stepped down from the council on September 1 in order to dedicate her full attention to her health.

Anthony was injured after being struck by a van in 2023.

The special primary election for the seat will be on November 4 with the special general election taking place on December 2.

Along with McDermott, business owner David Caldwell and attorney Jeff Levy are vying for the seat.
