RI man accused of DUI, allegedly ‘covered’ in suspected fentanyl
EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (WLNE) — An East Greenwich man has been charged with DUI after town police investigated a car crash into a Division Street building Wednesday night.
David Hickey, 33, is charged with driving under the influence, refusal to submit to a chemical test, obstruction and duty to stop in an accident resulting in injury.
According to East Greenwich Police Department Chief Stephen J. Brown, officers responded to 1000 Division Street Wednesday night at approximately 7:39 p.m. for a report of a vehicle into a building.
Officers were notified en route to the scene that the alleged vehicle operator and a passenger had fled the scene on foot.
A third person was found unconscious in the vehicle by arriving officers and was transported to an area hospital, according to Chief Brown.
A search of the area was conducted by East Greenwich police with the assistance of a Rhode Island State Police (RISP) K-9 unit and drone.
Hickey and the passenger were later located, according to Chief Brown.
According to Chief Brown, Hickey was found to be covered in a powdery white substance believed to fentanyl.
The RISP K-9 was exposed to the substance and was given Narcan.
