Advocacy group says RI homelessness ticked down from 2024, 2,373 people unhoused

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — New data from the Rhode Island Coalition to End Homelessness shows overall homelessness decreased since last year.

According to data released Tuesday during their state of homelessness address, 69 fewer people were included in this year’s point in time count, marking a 2.8 percent decrease since 2024.

A closer look at the numbers shows, of the 2,373 people experiencing homelessness overall this year:

  • 1,022 were chronically homeless
  • 1,507 were individuals
  • 866 were people with minor children
  • 248 were fleeing domestic violence
  • 125 were veterans
  • And 118 were young adults between 18 and 24.

While the overall numbers have decreased, unsheltered homelessness continues to rise.

That’s up 15 percent from last year.

The Coalition to End Homelessness also notes they were able to secure $4 million more than anticipated in state homelessness funds, and plan to continue pursuing legislation to remove barriers to shelter openings, among other actions to prevent and end homelessness.

This afternoon, Rhode Island House Minority Leader Michael Chippendale and members of his Republican caucus will hold a press conference.

They’re slated to discuss the housing crisis in the state, with Chippendale’s office detailing in a release that Rhode Island’s focus, in his view, is on, quote, “Building bureaucracy instead of homes.”

That press conference will be at 1.
