PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Wyatt Detention Center detainee was sentenced on Tuesday for possessing and distributing contraband inside the facility, according to Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom.

36-year-old Matthew Pizarro was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison, followed by 24 months of supervised release, with the first six months to be served on home confinement.

According to Bloom, Pizarro had admitted that he worked with others inside and outside the facility to “arrange for the delivery and distribution of contraband.”

Video surveillance showed a now former correctional officer visiting Pizarro’s cell for less than a minute, then Pizzaro visiting a detainee’s cell for less than a minute.

After a strip search of the detainee’s cell, officers found a package containing suboxone strips.

Inside Pizarro’s cell, officers found a plastic bottle containing 4.5 grams of marijuana inside a pillowcase.

The strips were sent to a lab and confirmed to contain buprenorphine, which is an ingredient in Suboxone, a Schedule III controlled substance, according to Bloom.

On June 10, 2024, Pizarro pled guilty to providing contraband to an inmate.

On March 12, the defendant pled guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute controlled substances, distribution pf Suboxone, and possession of contraband by an inmate.
