Short-term parking sales tax now in effect in Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — You’ll now have to pay extra fees when you park your car in a parking lot at the mall or even at the beach.

A sales tax on short-term parking is now in effect.

It applies to any parking lots or garages in Rhode Island that can be used for 30 days or less.

The sales tax rate is seven percent on top of the regular fee for parking.

The tax will not apply to street parking meters, only those in parking lots.
