School bus-involved crash leaves Cumberland road closed

CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WLNE) — Cumberland police have responded to a car crash involving a school bus in the area of 203 Nate Whipple Highway that occurred Thursday morning.

According to Cumberland Police Department Chief Matthew Benson, there are no signs of any outward injuries in the crash.

Benson also said that an operator of one of the vehicles collapsed after they removed themselves from their vehicle.

CPR was performed on the operator by police, and then by fire and EMS personnel, who were able to regain the operator’s pulse, according to Benson.

The operator was then transported to an area hospital.

A second vehicle involved in the incident shows significant damage.

The cause of the crash is unknown at this time and the road near the scene was closed as personnel processed the scene.

A statement from the bus company on the crash read as follows:

We can confirm that our bus was involved in a two-vehicle accident this morning on Nate Whipple Highway. There were no students on the bus.

We are cooperating fully with local authorities on their investigation and do not have any other details to share at this time.
