Providence City Hall comments on ICE agents-related car crash
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Providence City Hall has weighed in on Tuesday’s Chalkstone Avenue car crash involving ICE agents.
A statement from Providence City Hall Press Secretary Anthony Vega reads in part:
Mayor Smiley is aware of the incident involving ICE agents yesterday afternoon. He understands these are anxious times for many in the community and reaffirms that Providence Police officers do not participate in immigration enforcement and will never ask about an individual’s documentation. The mayor’s priority is the safety and well-being of all residents and ensuring essential city services are accessible to everyone without fear. Providence remains committed to being a welcoming city for all, regardless of immigration status.
Mayor Smiley issued an executive order on September 22 called “A Safe Providence for All,” which reaffirmed the Providence police policy of not acting as immigration enforcement.
Vega’s statement concluded:
We can confirm that the individuals involved in the crash were federal agents with ICE. The ICE vehicle was struck by another vehicle as the agent entered the intersection. No one was seriously injured, and no arrests or summons were issued. Any questions regarding the reason for their pursuit should be directed to ICE.
