RI officials and PPSD break ground on Mount Pleasant High School remodeling project
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island officials and Providence Public Schools leaders gathered for the groundbreaking of Mount Pleasant High School’s remodeling project on Wednesday.
According to PPSD, the 90-year-old building will be updated to serve as an early college and career academy, which will include “state-of-the-art labs” for robotics, engineering, and career and technical education programs.
As part of the $110 million investment, the outdated south classroom wing will be replaced with a “modern four-story addition.”
The project will also include an updated gym, auditorium, and cafeteria.
The renovations are part of PPSD’s plan to provide students with a new or “like-new” school by 2030.
“This groundbreaking marks a major milestone in our work to modernize Providence’s schools and expand opportunities for our students,” Mayor Brett Smiley said. “Through these investments, we are creating a state-of-the-art learning facility that prepares students for both college and career success. Together we are investing in the next generation of learners and leaders who will shape our city’s future.”
Construction is expected to be completed by 2027.
