Swansea residential school staff member dies after alleged assault by student

SWANSEA, Mass. (WLNE) — Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn, III said a staff member at Meadowridge Academy in Swansea died after allegedly being assaulted by a student on Oct. 15.

Quinn said 53-year-old Amy Morrell of Riverside, Rhode Island was kicked in the chest by a 14-year-old female student who was attempting to leave the school without permission and while staff was attempting to restrain the student.

Morrell was transported to a local hospital, where she died on Thursday.

The student was arraigned on a charge of assault and battery causing serious bodily injury.

When reached for comment, a representative for Meadowridge Academy said:

The Meadowridge Academy community is deeply saddened by the passing of direct care staff member, Amy Morrell. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Amy’s family during this difficult time. Support services and resources are available to assist students and staff as we grieve this tragic loss.
