Smithfield: Expected overcrowding prompts cancelation of town council-school committee workshop

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — A joint Smithfield Town Council/School Committee workshop originally slated for Tuesday night has been cancelled due to concerns of overcrowding.

A larger venue would be needed to accommodate the expected turnout for a meeting that was expected to address budgets, according to officials.

The workshop has been rescheduled for November 6, and the school committee will hold its regular meeting on the same day.

The town’s schools have been in headlines recently due to an alleged anti-Semitic hazing incident involving members of the high school’s football team.

Two local Jewish groups raised concerns with the recent reinstatement of the players reportedly involved in the incident.

Smithfield Superintendent Dawn Bartz responded to an inquiry of the reinstatements, in full:

“The disciplinary process has concluded, and we will not be discussing details involving students.”
