Attleboro woman pleads guilty to embezzlement

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WLNE) — The United States Attorney’s Office said that an Attleboro woman who worked for a Franklin environmental services business plead guilty to embezzling more than $400,000 from her employer.

54-year-old Marie Hobson was charged with two counts of wire fraud and one count of filing a false tax return.

The office said that between December 2019 and March 2025, Hobson inflated her own payroll by adding approximately $268,046 in phony expense reimbursements.

She also used her company-issued credit card to pay for personal costs totaling more than $105,000.

In order to conceal the theft, she manipulated the company’s accounting software to show her only receiving her normal salary.

The office said Hobson also failed to report the funds that she embezzled on her federal income tax filings for tax years 2021 through 2024, resulting in a tax loss to the government of approximately $81,000.

Hobson was scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 22, 2026.
